This verse is spoken
by Job, in response to God's revelation of his power and wisdom. Job is
acknowledging that God is all-powerful and all-knowing, and that there is
nothing that can stop him from achieving His purposes. It's a statement of
faith and submission to God, recognizing that He is in control and we should
trust in His wisdom and justice.
Job 42 is the end of
the book of Job, and verse 2 is the statement that marks the end of Job's
questioning of God's justice and his submission to God's authority.
In the New Testament,
Jesus teaches about the importance of submission to God's power and authority
in several verses. For example:
- In Matthew 26:39 Jesus says
"Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and
prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet
not as I will, but as you will."
- In John 5:30 Jesus says "By
myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just,
for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me."
- In John 6:38 Jesus says "For I
have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who
sent me."
These verses suggest
that Jesus teaches that submitting to God's power and authority is necessary
for following him, doing the will of God, and for carrying out the mission that
God has given Him (and us).
It's worth noting
that submitting to God's power and authority is a recurring theme in the Bible,
and there are many verses that call for it. Jesus is the perfect example of
submission to God's will.
